No. Any tree that is currently standing has some level of risk. To enjoy the benefits of trees we must accept certain risk associated with trees. Cabling and bracing when done properly is a method of reducing the likelihood of branch failure and has proven to extend tree life expectancy and reduce tree risk.

When installed and maintained correctly, cabling and bracing should not harm trees. The preventive benefits of installing a cable far outweigh the risk of branch failure. The hole drilled through the tree is a small cavity that the tree can quickly seal. We also offer a alternative cable installation that does not involve drilling.

We offer 2 types of cabling systems.

1) Steel cable (Drilling required)

2) Rope cable (No drilling required)

Steel Cable

Our certified arborist assesses the tree to identify the appropriate locations for installing cables based on the tree's structure and condition.

Installation method

Holes are strategically drilled through the branches or trunk to accommodate the installation of cables. These holes are carefully placed to avoid harming essential tissues while ensuring optimal support. The gauge of the cables is selected based on factors such as the tree's size, species, and condition. Our most commonly used steel cable is the 5/16 "extra high strength cable," providing a holding capacity of 11,200 lbs.

Rope Cable

Similar to steel cables, but without the drilling. Installed by our certified arborists. (Even though it is made of rope, it is still considered a cable by arborists. Look, we don't make the rules lol) ,

Installation method

However, unlike steel cables, rope cables do not require drilling through the tree. Instead, they are installed by the arborists, up in the tree by splicing the rope around the branches, eliminating the need for drilling. The rope cabling system can be either dynamic or static. In a dynamic system, the cable allows the tree to move freely until it is stretched to a point where it provides support. Some pretty high tech stuff.

Our most common rope cable provides a holding capacity of 8,000lbs.

Installing a cable on a tree is similar to performing surgery on a living organism. Just as you wouldn't trust just anyone to perform surgery, you shouldn't trust just anyone to install cables on your trees. It requires precision, expertise, and a deep understanding of the tree's structure to ensure the procedure is done correctly and safely.

What does this mean?

This means that before we even consider installing a cable on your tree, we must first perform a assessment. Imagine if we begin to install a ton of hardware on your tree just to have it removed in a year. "The Frankenstein tree" lol.

And no, we're not just drilling into the tree and tying a cable. We install cables and bracing rods to specific guidelines set by the ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) and also consider many tree factors, such as health, condition, age, species and site location.

Installing a cable on a tree requires expertise and should be done by a trained professional. Attempting to install a cable without proper knowledge and equipment can result in damage to the tree and pose safety risks. Therefore, it's highly recommended to hire a qualified individual with experience in tree cabling and bracing.
